I
hope most of the netizens know what a DNS is. It can be considers as a
phone book. When we type a url in the address bar of the browser and
press enter, the DNS service looks this name up to match it to a
computer’s ip address and finally it finds out the location of the site
as 8.11.63.52 or so. Hence the website gets loaded. By default, your
internet service providergives
you a free DNS server that your computer uses each time you use the
net. But this service may not be the best or can be unreliable or very
slow at times. So it is necessary to find out and use the best DNS
server. As i told above a good and fast dns server will quickly match up
the websites address and locate it quickly and hence you feel the
browsing a lot faster.
But
the next question is How do you Find the Fastest DNS server available
to you? Most of the netizens use the fast Open DNS server today, but it
not sure that you are getting the maximum speed even though you are
using Open DNS. But there is a tool callednamebench that hunts down the fastest dns servers available to you. Thomas Stromberg, a Google engineer based in Belgium, created Namebench.
Namebench does
some intense bench marks to determine the best dns server that suits
your connection. The best part is that, it supports Mac OS X, Windows,
and UNIX, and is available with a graphical user interface as well as a
command-line interface.
Using Namebench is extremely easy. Upon running the program just press the Start Benchmark option
an the software will automatically find the best dns server for your
connection in a few minutes after running the bench marks.
The results open up in a new page showing how much faster the found dns server is faster than google dns.

You can also see average response time for each DNS server in the graph displayed just below the above one.
When i ran the tests it was found that my current dns is 205% faster than Google Public DNS.
So, if you are ready to spare a few minutes with namebench you could
use the fastest dns server that is available to you and enjoy a faster browsing experience.
